The city of Chicago held a tribute today to honor Lieutenant Colonel Ryan Yantis of Crystal River, IL as one of the officers who risked life and limb to save the victims of the attack. who was at the Pentagon during the time a plane struck the building, was one of the first to witness a victim emerge from the building and begin to help save others who would soon follow.
“I saw the first person badly burned and injured and I switched from just being a bystander to actively helping carry people out of the building going back and we spent about three-and-a-half hours in the inner courtyard ready to go into the building,” Yantis said.
The Chicago September 11 tribute was one of many around the nation today, held in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the attacks and those who gave their lives to save others and defend the nation.
“Even though September 11 is a very tragic day and there was a great loss of life,” Yantis said, “the resiliency— the strength of the American people— just part of the international community…how wonderful we were to each other…that is what we should remember.”
