Lauderdale, Fl – Due to budget cuts, the sole ambulance available to the east end of I-75, commonly known as Alligator Alley, will no longer by available after September. Since 2003 the ambulance has rushed to emergency calls on the east end of alligator alley along with medical crews from the borders of Dade, Palm Beach, Collier, and Hendry counties. On average 360 calls are responded to each year.
The station has a total of five firefighter-paramedics but will be reduced to three who will man the station’s sole fire truck. Furthermore, the fire truck can only transport one person which means that victims will have to wait for further assistance or to be taken by helicopter.
The city of Weston has already notified Broward officials that they will be unable to be pulled away to respond to Alligator Alley crashes. Furthermore, travel from Weston to the Alley can take up to 30 minutes.
Studies estimate that the majority of drivers on Alligator Alley are speeding down the road at 84 miles per hour, 14 miles over the speed limit. Up to 180,000 vehicles travel between I-595 and Alligator Alley each day with the number potentially increasing during the busy seasonal months.
