(USGovernment-News.Com, September 06, 2013 ) GOLDSBORO, NC -- District Judge John Covolo wiped tears from his eyes as he listen to letters written by the family of John Stone, the 71-year-old Rocky Mount truck driver who died June 10 after his rig fell over a bridge overpass on Highway 301.
Stone died swerving to avoid the vehicle of 16-year-old driver Jordan Anne Thomas, who had simply pulled out too far into the intersection for Stone to avoid striking unless he jerked the wheel suddenly. Stone’s truck slid down the side of the overpass and landed in Stony Creek below.
Judge Covolo’s reaction came as the families of both Stone and Thomas— who pled guilty to failure to yield— expressed their admiration for each other and their sorrow for the tragedy of the situation.
“These are two good families here,” said Chris Stone, son of the deceased truck driver, “and the situation was a bad situation. We would like to thank everybody for their prayers and support.” The Stones requested a lighter sentence for Thomas, as they felt she took responsibility for her actions and they did not want her life to be wasted.
Thomas’ father, Eddie Thomas, said of the victim. “Mr. Stone is my hero. Because of his actions… my daughter is still alive, and I’m thankful for that.”
