(USGovernment-News.Com, August 16, 2013 ) Cincinnati, OH – On Wednesday Cincinnati law enforcement kicked off a new federally funded program across the state that will inform drivers to "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" during the Labor Day weekend. Law officials will be increasing their presence through the holiday weekend as history has shown that there is typically an uptick in drunken driving incidents during this time.
According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), on average, there is a fatal drunk driving accident every 51 seconds in the United States. As of mid-August Ohio State Highway Patrol have made more than 14,000 arrests related to drunk driving.
Police officials are hoping the new campaign and increased number of patrol vehicles will deter drivers from getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. Studies from the NHTSA have found high-visibility enforcement can reduce the number of drunk-driving fatalities by about 20 percent.
According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety there were more than 12,600 car collisions in 2001 involving an impaired driver. Approximately 5,200 of these accidents led to injuries and hundreds more were fatal collisions.
As the holiday weekend nears it is important that drivers heed the advice of law officials and do not put themselves and others in danger by getting behind the wheel while intoxicated.
If you or a loved one has been injured in an accident caused by a drunk driver, the victim may be entitled to compensation for property damage, medical bills, lost wages, and more.
