Mock School Invasion Used to Test Emergency Services

(USGovernment-News.Com, July 25, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The Randlman High School had a mass casualty training exercise that brought in 150 public safety officers from across the county last week.



The exercise included three gunman who invaded the school. The gunman “killed” two law enforcement officers and two civilians, along with wounding six others. Two of the gunman were then “killed” while the other was taken into custody.



The episode was considered major opportunity for the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, police department, and Highway Patrol to work together. Emergency medical services, fire services and volunteers were also involved in the process to create a universal emphasis on safety and emergency control during the exercise.



Chatham County Sheriff’s SWAT team members were present as well as the Rapid Deployment instructors from the area in order to assist in the exercise.



During the event, shooters entered the school and fired shots, taking out school resource officer. Officers practiced evacuating students, teachers, assessing victims and subduing the threats.



Emergency responders were given opportunity to clear victims, while paramedics were given a chance to care for victims in a real-time scenario. As part of the exercise, six individuals were taken the hospital in a real-time extraction scenario.



Director of the Randolph County Emergency Services, Donovan Davis, stated that authorities will now look over the phases of the drill. By doing so they can better recalibrate the particular needs of the school and county in regards to such possible events.



Sheriff Maynard Reid stated that the incident is “one of the things we train for but hope never ever happens in this county. It’s a training exercise and mistakes made we’ll learn from and never do again.”



Reid stated that all agencies participating “come together and work to provide public safety for out children and teachers in our school system.” He added that other such scenarios have taken place at other schools.



“All the police, medical rescue and fire departments have worked together to make this a successful training exercise,” said Reid. “There’s great cooperation among all the agencies in the county. Everybody works good together for the common good of all.”
