(USGovernment-News.Com, July 24, 2013 ) KNOXVILLE, T.N. — Between 2009 and 2012, four people have died in craft breweries, and the recent death of a welder at Calhoun’s BBQ & Brewery is prompting questions about the safety hazards in these smaller industrial environments.
Welder Mark Moynihan became the most recent victim of accidental death when he crawled into the narrow tube of a fermentation tank to seal a crack in its structure. Lighting his torch, the oxygen-saturated air created a combustion which instantly disintegrated his hair and clothing. He died 75 days later in the hospital.
This is not the only incident of accidental brewery fatality and industry experts say that these incidences are completely avoidable. Moynihan’s wife sued brewery owner Copper Cellar and the suit was settled for undisclosed amount.
