(USGovernment-News.Com, July 24, 2013 ) Tulsa, OK – As the summer heat continues to settle across the nation, the Food and Drug Administration has warned consumers of the risk of wearing sunscreen near an open flame. According to the FDA by early July there have been at least five separate incidents of people suffering severe burns while wearing sunscreen near sources of fire. The burns were serious enough to warrant medical treatment.
During fall 2012 several Banana Boat sunscreen products were voluntarily recalled. According to Energizer Holdings Inc. if the product had not yet dried and an individual was near a flammable source the product could ignite on their skin.
The FDA is still warning consumers of the risk of applying any type of sunscreen containing flammable materials near an open flame. Furthermore all persons should wait until the sunscreen has fully dried and feel their skin to ensure the product has dried. In all instances of an individual suffering burns the problem occurred after they had applied the sunscreen. The ignition sources varied and included a citronella candle, a cigarette, and a grill.
