(USGovernment-News.Com, July 20, 2013 ) Victoria, Australia -- The Commonwealth Lawyers Association says the controversial removal of Sri Lanka’s Chief Justice shows a lack of judicial independence, and group is asking for commonwealth nations to boycott this year’s Heads of Government meeting, which is set to take place in Sri Lanka.
However, only Canada has threatened to boycott the November meeting in protest against the human rights violations, while Australia has dismissed the Association’s allegations as simply “wrong”.
According to Alex Ward, vice president of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, holding the meeting in Sri Lanka with everything that is going in on the country, which is basically comparable to things going on in Zimbabwe, Pakistan and Fiji, is going against everything the association is about and stands for, and to hold the meeting in Sri Lanka seems to say they are giving that country the tick of approval.
The difficulty, though, is that the United Nations is continually putting pressure on Sri Lanka to allow investigations into what happened at the end of the Civil War and why there are so many human rights violation allegations going on, but Sri Lanka doesn’t seem to want to entertain that idea because there are so many conflicted stories and allegations on both sides.
