(USGovernment-News.Com, July 19, 2013 ) Windsor, ON – As humidex values in southern Ontario continue to rise, the Ontario Provincial Police are warning motorists of the threat of tire failure due to high temperatures. The OPP warns that tire and wheel related problems occur more frequently during hot weather than any other time of the year.
Improperly inflated, and overinflated, tires can overheat during hot weather and lead to a tire blowout. Improper inflation could also affect how the car maneuvers and brakes.
"That could cause the vehicle to veer sharply from one side to the other, it could put you into a guard rail, it could put you into another motor vehicle, we could end up having a huge collision take place," Sgt. Peter Leon told CBC News.
Part of the problems is that drivers will overestimate how much air their tires need thus putting too much pressure on the tires. The Ontario Provincial Police recommend checking tire pressure if your vehicle has not been driven lately and inflating them to manufacturer recommendations. They also advise to keep on hand an emergency safety kit for summertime that includes sunscreen, water, a hat, and rain gear.
In 2009 more than 140 car collisions were caused by a tire blowout while an additional 44 were caused by poor tire tread in Ontario. It is important that all motorists maintain their vehicle properly in order to avoid being involved in a serious car accident.
