Arnold Law Firm Provides Tips on How to Keep Kids Safe from Soccer Concussions

(USGovernment-News.Com, July 19, 2013 ) SACRAMENTO, CA – The Arnold Law Firm, a group of personal injury attorneys in Sacramento, reminds families to put safety first as kids flock to the soccer fields this season to reduce the risk of concussion injuries. Sacramento’s Raley Field was home to ‘Sacramento Soccer Day’ yesterday, hosting two exhibition matches presented by UC Davis Children’s Hospital, bringing awareness to the risk for concussion in this summer sport.

According to the American Academy of Neurology, girls’ soccer has the second-highest rate of concussions among high school sports, with a concussion occurring in nearly 1/1000 games. Concussions can be a very serious form of head trauma, with symptoms that include dizziness, blurry vision, headaches and nausea, as well as confusion, ringing in the ears and lethargy.

“The primary concern in concussions is after the attempt of “heading” the ball… Some early studies are starting to show… brain changes on soccer players who have not had concussions but have had a lot of headers,” said Christopher Nowinski, co-founder of the Sports Legacy Institute.

Nowinski also warns that those with weak neck muscles, particularly girls, may be at higher risk for concussions caused during soccer matches.

Parents must pay close attention and seek immediate medical attention if their child begins to display symptoms of a concussion, which may not occur immediately. A child suffering from a concussion should always be under a physician’s care, as post-concussion syndrome and other complications could arise.

Physical activity should also be limited due to the risk for second impact syndrome, a rapid swelling of the brain that occurs if someone sustains a blow to the head before their concussion has healed. According to Nowinski, second impact syndrome is fatal in 50 percent of cases.
