(USGovernment-News.Com, July 12, 2013 ) In the past, anyone in Alabama could call themselves a “private investigator.” However, things have changed with a new licensing process and a state regulatory board.
Senate Bill 172 was passed on the final day of the legislative session, and Governor Robert Bentley swiftly signed it into law. 48 other states have passed similar laws requiring private investigators to be licensed and giving consumers an outlet to voice complaints.
Because of “a few bad apples” who were ruining the reputation of credible investigators, the Alabama Private Investigators Association lobbied hard for the new law. Madison County private investigator Bill Posey will be one of the board members of the newly formed state board.
Others will be chosen by the governor and state and local groups.
Posey explained that the new law is one of the best things to happen to the industry in Alabama because of the public safety threat. He stated that the board will get rid of “thieves and thugs” who have been advertising themselves as private investigators.
In the future, private investigators will undergo background checks and will be obliged to submit their fingerprints. Furthermore, they will have to partake in continuing education courses, similar to private investigators in other states.
In both the House and Senate, there was nearly unanimous support for the new law, SB 172, which was sponsored by Representative Howard Sanderford from Huntsville, Alabama, and Senator Bill Holtzclaw of Madison, Alabama.
