(USGovernment-News.Com, July 12, 2013 ) Bridgeport, CT – After a third pedestrian accident is reported within a month of the last one, the city of Bridgeport has unveiled a plan for creating safer streets.
The initiative will focus on traffic and pedestrian safety and includes an increase of marked police cruisers situated around schools, the installation of speed bumps, and an increased use of speed indicator devices.
"Let's crack down, let's stop 'em, let's slow them down and if we do this more often the message will get out," Richard Bonney of the Bridgeport City Council told WTNH News 8.
In May 2013, a six-year-old child was struck by an SUV on Washington Boulevard and suffered trauma to multiple organs. Less than two months later a seven-year-old was struck by a careless driver on Highland Avenue, the young girl had stepped off her bus and crossed in front of it when she was struck.
Police are urging parents to remind their kids to look both ways before crossing the street, and drivers to slow down and watch for pedestrians.
In 2008 more than 1,160 pedestrian accidents were reported according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation and between 1999 and 2008 more than 11,000 fatal and injury-related pedestrian collisions were reported.
