Industry Statistics Shows Repeal of Helmet Law Costing Michigan

(USGovernment-News.Com, June 29, 2013 ) Orlando, FL -- According to an insurance industry study, medical claims from motorcycle crashes rose by over 20% in the last year within the state of Michigan. The insurance industry claims the state's rebuking the necessity of utilizing helmets is the main cause.

Across the United States, motorcyclists opposed the mandating of helmet use for riders. Little by little, the individual states have been relinquishing the need for the rule, and deaths have been on the rise.

For over 40 years, Michigan requires all riders to wear helmets, up until the state legislators changed the laws in 2012. That change stated only younger riders needed to wear helmets (those under 21). Average insurance payments for motorcycle injury claims sat at $5,410 prior to the law change. The price is now $7,257 following its passing. That constitutes a 34% increase, as the Highway Loss Data Institute noted.

After the adjusting for age and motorcycle type, rider age, gender, marital status, weather, and almost any other reasonable factor, the increase comes out to 22% overall.

“The cost per injury claim is significantly higher after the law changed than before, which is consistent with other research that shows riding without a helmet leads to more head injuries,” David Zuby, chief research officer for the data institute and an affiliated organization, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, said. The data institute publishes insurance loss statistics on most car, SUV, pickup truck and motorcycle models on U.S. roads

Further studies have exposed the death increase after states eliminate mandatory helmet repeal ments, but the industry study is the first to note specific effect of repealing on the severity of injuries. Certain states have sought to lessen the blow to the laws by setting minimum medical requirements, however, “that doesn’t even come close to covering the lifelong care of somebody who is severely brain-injured and who cannot work and who is going to be on Medicaid and a ward of the state,” Jackie Gillan, president of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, which backs mandatory helmet requirements for all riders, said.
