(USGovernment-News.Com, June 19, 2013 ) Miami, FL – The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) has ordered the San Martin De Porras assisted living facility to pay $20,000 in fines and close its doors. In February 2012 inspectors came into the facility in response to a complaint and found an elderly woman tied to a wheelchair.
According to reports the woman, only identified as resident 1, was tied down and struggling to get up when investigators arrived. She had two bands across her abdomen and legs holding her down, additionally she was being forced to sit on a pressure sore located on her buttocks. A registered nurse who testified on behalf of the AHCA said the woman was also not being properly treated for her diabetes and seizure disorder.
Earlier in the year the assisted living facility was cited for having inadequate staff. Years earlier they were cited for poor record-keeping, failing to assist residents take their medications, and failure to maintain proper medication records.
The facility had 12 licensed beds and the resident who was tied to the wheelchair should not have been admitted back in but according to the owner she was allowed back at her daughter’s request.
A congressional report by the Special Investigations Division of the House Government Reform Committee found that 30 percent of nursing home facilities were cited for more than 9,000 instances of abuse between 1999 and 2001. Some of the most common problems included inadequate medical care and untreated bedsores.
