(USGovernment-News.Com, June 09, 2013 ) Las Vegas, NV -- Harmon Hotel, a glittery, blue glass cylindrical building that, due to several flaws, never opened, is wanted demolished by several other businesses on the Las Vegas strip. However, the defendant, project general contractor Tutor Perini Corp., says demolition would be premature.
The Harmon has remained unused and unoccupied since the $8.5 billion CityCenter development opened in December 2009. Co-owned by MGM Resorts and Dubai World, the 67-acre master-planned development features several hotels, condominiums, a casino and an upscale shopping and restaurant complex.
The Harmon Hotel was designed to be 48 stories and serve as the project centerpiece. It was shortened by nearly half after construction inspectors found flaws in reinforcing beams as lower floors were built. Those flaws were never fixed, and the hotel never opened. It has stood empty for almost 4 years.
MGM Resorts wants the building torn down before a nearly almost $500 million civil construction defect lawsuit can begin in Clark County District Court next January.
According to the Perini Corp., the building’s plans were faulty from the start, but the work that was done was sufficient for the building to be safe. By demolishing it before trial, the corporation said, evidence would be destroyed and everyone would get the impression that the builders were to blame, not the designers.
Originally, Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez approved demolition of the building last summer, but withdrew permission in December pending another round of destructive testing.
