Young Victim of Hit-and-Run Becomes Responsive Once Again

(USGovernment-News.Com, June 07, 2013 ) London, UK -- Diamond Battle wanted to be everyone's friends, but after Friday and four days following her aunt being struck by a hit-and-run driver, all the family was looking for was for Diamond to breathe on her own.

Six-year-old Diamond was struck by a vehicle while crossing the Washington Avenue on Memorial Day with her 60-year-old aunt. The driver of the vehicle did not stop after striking the child, and instead drove off.

It was a tragedy that brought family and friends of the child to the crime scene on Friday to keep Diamond's story from fading from the minds of the community.

Twenty miles from the group that gathered to pray for and speak for Diamond was the girl herself, stuck at the Yale-New Haven Hospital, still in critical condition. The news has been mostly difficult to handle for the family and friends of relatives; however, according to Councilman and uncle Richard Bonney, there may be some good news yet.

Diamond was reported to open her eyes for the first time since the accident, according to Bonney. Her mother was by her side when it occurred and was able to make eye-contact with her daughter. A day later, Diamond was able to respond to questions for the first time since the accident.

She's fighting hard and we think she's winning," Bonney said, adding that Diamond was nearly breathing without mechanical assistance. But the road to recovery is a long one, as anyone close to the situation will admit.

"We're here tonight ... to ask the Lord for a miracle," said the Rev. Mary Lee of El-Shaddai Church of God and Christ before leading about 30 people in prayer for Diamond's recovery."We want her to know that the whole city of Bridgeport is supporting her. I think that's what they need right now," added Lee, who is a friend of Diamond's family.
