Study Shows Short Names Earn More Than Long

(USGovernment-News.Com, June 07, 2013 ) Victoria, Australia -- A study conducted by TheLadders.com, a career website, found that names mothers choose for their children may actually dictate the future success of future career-based success.

The Ladders.com stated that it analyzed the data of first names across thousands of companies, taking in over 6 million members names and measuring them against variables such as industry, salary level, and location of work.

"We wanted to prove the null hypothesis that what your mother names you makes a difference," the company said.

"Doing a simple linear regression, it looks like every additional letter added to your name (after five letters) accounts for a $3,600 drop in annual salary. One exception is names with seven letters, like Stephen, but closer inspection showed that seven-letter names lend themselves to males over females, so it's higher paid males over-indexing and inflating the seven-letter bucket."

The site took a look at nicknames or shortened names as well. 'Steve' earned more than 'Stephen' did, while Bill was a higher earner than “William”. Even 'Debbie' earned more than 'Deborah' despite a single letter difference.

There was a single exception regarding name length, which was Lawrence vs Larry, wherein the longer name won out. One might assume that could have something to do with the fact that 'Larry' is notoriously the name of untrustworthy, evil, or simply bumbling characters in almost every movie they have been in since movies began.

"So, to all prospective mothers, our advice is to keep Baby's name short and sweet -- your child will thank you when they're raking in the money one day," writes TheLadders.com blogger Daniel Bronyn.

Bronyn, who sits as director of consumer marketing for TheLadders.com, closed with the statement "Thanks, Mom, for naming me Daniel but nicknaming me Dan. Happy Mother's Day!"
