Status Conference Held on C8 Personal Injury Lawsuits

(USGovernment-News.Com, June 04, 2013 ) Dublin, Ireland -- A status conference was held two weeks ago as part of the first pretrial court proceedings since multiple C8 personal injury cases against Dupont were moved to the United States District Court in the Southern District of Ohio.

Earlier, a Judicial Panel on the Multidistrict Litigation approved and assigned all the cases, noting that they shared common questions of fact, according to the judicial panel. In total, 26 suits, 7 of which are from West Virginia, have been filed.

The C8 Science panel released a final report in October on the possible links between C8 exposure and medical problems, including medically induced high blood pressure, high cholesterol, kidney cancer, thyroid disease, testicular cancer, ulcerative colitis and gestational diabetes, a prenatal onset of type 2 diabetes.

C8 is a man-made chemical, also known as perfluorooctanoic acid or PFOA, used in manufacturing products including nonstick cookware, protective finishes on carpets and water-resistant clothing.

According to the 2005 class action lawsuit settlement, a science panel of three independent epidemiologists was to determine whether there was a probable link between C8 exposure and human disease. Nearly 70,000 people in the six affected water districts were tested and had medical histories taken in addition to several other studies including DuPont employees.

At the conclusion of this process, the cases could be transferred back to their original home districts, or they could stay with the judge who has handled the pretrial matters, according to to Harry Dietzel, an attorney for the plaintiffs.
DuPont officials reiterated their earlier statement which said that "Lawsuits such as these ignore family history and lifestyle choices as a primary cause of health issues and disease in specific individuals. DuPont will vigorously defend against any and all such lawsuits not based upon valid science while providing good jobs with good wages and benefits in our local community."
