New Info-graphic Launched on Kidnapping Facts and Statistics

(USGovernment-News.Com, June 02, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Criminal Justice Careers recently released a new info-graphic on U.S. kidnapping facts and statistics. With informative figures and graphics, this info-graphic clearly highlights stereotypical kidnappings within the U.S. This includes 115 cases or so per year that are associated with ransom notes and drop-spots for money. Sadly, 40% of children that are abducted are found dead each year as well.

According to the info-graphic, 4% of the abducted are never found. With kidnapping cases in the U.S., roughly 70% of cases involve strangers. Only 30% are associated with slight acquaintances. In the U.S., abductions take place every 40 seconds. This includes individuals that are well under the age of 18. In total, this comes out to over 2,000 children that are abducted in the U.S. every year. In fact, one child in every 10,000 kidnappings is slain. Based on the info-graphic, there are over 800,000 child abductions and kidnappings that take place each year.

Out of these abductions, approximately 80 kids are gone or cannot be counted for. While there are always false alarms or runways, child kidnappings continue to soar at alarming rates. This is a real problem that countless parents across the nation have a tremendous fear of. In fact, 75% of parents within the nation fear their child or children will be abducted. 33% of these parents also state that this is a frequent fear that rivals any other fears they may have. Based on the info-graphic, 69,000 of the 800,000 children reported missing annually are abducted. While 12,000 of these adductions are committed by non-family perpetrators, 37% of abductors are complete strangers to victims.

While strangers certainly account for a large number of abductors, not all of them are unknown to their victims. In fact, 82% of reported cases include family members as culprits. The odds of a minor being kidnapped by someone they don’t know is also 1 in 560. In addition, the odds of being abducted by a family member, friend, or loved one is 1 in 180.

The info-graphic also showcases some vital and realistic facts. This includes the fact that most abductions occur within a quarter mile of the victim’s home. Girls also make up ¾ of the victims that have been kidnapped by non-family members. Sadly, 1 out of 5 children reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children end up dead. Out of these kids, 74% of them are dead within 2 hours of the initial abduction.

According to the info-graphic, 75% of non-family abductors are male. 69% of them are even younger than 30 years of age. The U.S. Justice Department also reports that most strangers try to grab their victims on the street. A large number of them also try to lure unsuspecting kids into their cars or vehicles. While 32% of abductions take place on streets or in cars, 25% of them occur in heavily wooden parks or forests. An additional 31% of victims are physically attacked, including 46% that are sexually assaulted. 40% of all perpetrators also use weapons, and 2/3 of all victims are girls.
