Bloomberg: New York City Efforts Against Gun Violence Ahead of the Nation

(USGovernment-News.Com, May 28, 2013 ) Albuquerque, NM -- Mayor Bloomberg boasted a report by the Department of Health and Hygiene Sunday which said that the reduction in gun violence has vastly outpaced the nation.

The study measured firearm-related deaths and injuries reported from the years 2000 to 2011. In 2000, there were 524 gun-related deaths in the city, but in 2011 there were only 366 firearm homicides.

Bloomberg says that’s a sharp contrast than the rest of the United States’ trend, which showed no decline during the same time period. In 2011, New York City’s firearm death rate was 4.3 per 100,000, less than half the rate of the nation, which was 10 per 100,000 in the same year.

According to the study, the city’s firearm homicide rate also ranks considerably low among the counties containing the nation’s 25 most populated cities, and the city’s firearm suicide rate is the lowest among among all of them.In addition, weapon-carrying in New York City schools is also lower than the national average.

Bloomberg credited the city’s rather strict gun laws and law enforcement policies that have made drastic changes in the last 11 years.

He does admit, however, that gun violence remains a problem. In some New York communities, such as Harlem and Crown Heights, have gun-related homicide rates that are twice New York City’s average.
