(USGovernment-News.Com, May 28, 2013 ) Albuquerque, NM -- When Florida’s alimony laws were written, women didn’t work or have financial and economic freedom. Today, more women in the United States hold jobs than men, but Florida’s alimony laws don’t reflect that. In fact, the laws still favor permanent alimony, until death.
Many alimony payers are forced into financial hardship, having to file bankruptcy, foreclose on their houses and return again and again to divorce court to make modifications on their payment plans.
According to Alan Fisher, an attorney at Family Law Reform, Inc., it sets back blended families who must pay alimony. While it takes away from children, new spouses and even new children created by new marriages, the alimony payers get to spend the rest of their life on an unfair welfare system.
However, Florida Governor Rick Scott refuses to make changes to the alimony laws, saying it would make unfair and unanticipated results to the families receiving alimony. He even admits that there is a growing problem in regards to alimonies, from the difficulties of marital issues even without children. But he doesn’t believe that the system has become abusive at the hands of arbitrary law.
Litigating divorce lawyers also disapprove of changing the laws partly due to earning money from alimony payers hiring attorneys when they must return to court. More time in court means more money in their pockets.
In contrast, republican representatives Ritch Workman and Kelli Stargel are working on getting legislations changed to reflect better and fairer divorce laws passed in the House and Senate.
