(USGovernment-News.Com, May 24, 2013 ) Tucson, AZ – Early Thursday morning a 64-year-old man on a bicycle was struck by a car traveling east on Irvington Road. The driver fled the scene of the accident and police were immediately called to the scene. When police arrived the bicyclist was pronounced dead.
Witnesses provided a description of the vehicle and deputies found it hours later along with a suspect who has been arrested and is facing second degree murder charges as well as leaving the scene of a fatal accident. It is suspected that the driver was intoxicated at the time of the collision and may have run a red light and struck the elderly man.
According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, in 2011, more than 1,900 pedacyclist crashes were reported throughout the state and more than 20 were fatal. Additionally, cyclists between the ages of 45 and 64 were the most frequently involved age group in bicycle accidents. The number of pedacyclists involved in fatal accidents actually grew between 2010 and 2011.
