New Study Finds That Americans Are Not Driving As Much As They Used To Reports Greg Coleman Law

(USGovernment-News.Com, May 18, 2013 ) KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – For the eighth year in a row the number of miles driven by Americans has dropped a new study from the United States Public Interest Research Group indicates. The number of miles being driven peaked in 2004 and currently the average American is driving about the same amount of mileage as they did back in 1997.

Millennials are the driving force behind the change as 16 to 34 year olds drove on average 23% less in 2009 than in 2001. Additionally, the number of miles traveled via public transit rose by 40%. Millenials may also be driving less due to where they choose to live, many of them are more likely to live in an urban, walkable neighborhood and their advanced use of technology has allowed them better access to public transit routes.

Although the shift in driving could mean less auto accidents involving two vehicles, it could lead to more bicycling and pedestrian accidents as millenials opt for these modes of transportation instead. According to the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security the number of pedestrians involved in accidents rose between 2001 and 2002. Furthermore, the number of cyclist accidents in Knox County rose by 21% between 2009 and 2010.

If you or a loved one has been injured by a negligent driver, the victim may be entitled to compensation for property damage, medical bills, lost wages, and more. An experienced Knoxville personal injury attorney can help you determine if you may be entitled compensation for your accident injuries.
