(USGovernment-News.Com, May 17, 2013 ) Lexington, NC – According to phone records, the car accident that left a 57-year-old man dead on Tuesday was likely caused by texting and driving. Lance Jermaine Safford’s passenger vehicle was going 60 to 65 mph when he slammed into Richard Carter’s 2003 Pontiac Vibe on Interstate 85 Business Bus Loop.
The Highway Patrol’s Reconstruction Team found no signs that Safford’s car slowed down or braked before slamming into Carter’s vehicle. Unfortunately Carter was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and his airbags did not deploy. Carter was taken to Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center after the accident where he was later pronounced dead.
Safford was charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and a texting while driving charge is pending. In North Carolina it is illegal for any driver to text or read a text message while driving.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the most common cause of distracted driving is cell phone use. Additionally, a recent study conducted by researchers at the Center for Disease Control found that out of 8,505 teens surveyed, 45% admitted to texting while driving in the past 30 days. A survey conducted by AT&T back in March found that 49% of adults will admit to texting while driving and 98% know it is wrong of them to do so.
If you or a loved one has been hurt in an accident involving a driver who was texting while driving, the victim may be entitled to compensation for property damage, medical bills, lost wages, and more. An experienced Greensboro auto accident attorney can help you determine if you may be eligible to make a claim.
