Statistics Show Killings Down but Theft Up in Ireland

(USGovernment-News.Com, May 07, 2013 ) Bristol, UK -- The totals for robbery and burglary soared following the economic collapse that began late in 2007, according to the latest numbers on impact following the economic decline. There is, however, a silver lining following the rise, as a fall has been seen in killings, motor offenses, and general misdemeanors.

Spanning from 2007 to 2011, there was a 149% tally of sexual offences, according to the Central Statistics Office study of Garda figures on crime.

The researchers who tallied the research totals pointed to a massive increase had much to do with a review of all such offense cases that was launched in 2010. Robbery and extortion had jumped by 34% following the economic decline, while negligent and dangerous act saw a nearly 20% rise. Burglary was up by 17%, and could likely be attributed, at least in part, to the desperation of many in during the economic downturn.

The research did point to a drop in murder, manslaughter, and other killing statistics, including wrongful death and lesser offenses resulting in loss of life. The total drop was 51%, which is one of the larger drops seen in a like time frame.

Road traffic offenses also dropped in the last half-decade, with public order and social offenses decreasing by 20%. While burglary rose, damage to property dropped by 18% overall.

The CSO stated that the changes in all the figures may be caused by varying factors. Such causes can be basic criminal behavioral shifts, legislative changes, or even changes in the way that crimes are classified.

Also noted was the unfortunate statistics that showed that less than a quarter of 23% of all burglaries in 2011 were solved, while just over a third of all thefts were resolved in some action. Crime that was least likely to be solved was bicycle theft.
