Cities Want More Funding for Counter-Terrorism Efforts

(USGovernment-News.Com, May 07, 2013 ) London, UK -- Homeland and counterterrorism departments of Philadelphia are set to oversee security at the Broad Street Run, in an obvious response to the Boston bombing. In the past, security for the 10-mile race was simple handled by the vehicular-traffic unit, but following the attack in April, and in order to make people feel more safe, security has become the top priority.

In Los Angeles, there were more officers than in previous games, even for the playoffs. The same could be said for Dodgers games being held at home, with current sweeps and more frequent bomb-detecting dogs on call. In San Francisco, officials wanted additional cameras near the main streets for annual parades, such as the upcoming gay pride parade.

Police departments from New York to to Seattle, LA to Florida have been reexamining their counterterrorism strategy. However, even though the major cities are continuing to receive federal funding, smaller cities are seeing their own budget for safety reduced.

Police officials stated that the April bombing represented and underscoring of why such funding is severely important. A small-scale attack on the general public being carried out by legal residence shows that protection need not simply be created for large events and the most iconic cities. While Boston is certainly known, it is not what would be considered a terrorist high-priority target. Furthermore, the fact it was carried out by Americanized students, both of whom appeared to be active members of basic America society, should underscore a consistent need for security across the whole of America.

Commissioner of the Boston Police Department, Ed Davis, has said along with many other police officials that looking at ideas implemented by New York would be key. The latter city currently has 1,000 officers that are within the counterterrorism group. The city also has over 4,000 security cameras 25% of which are “smart cameras” that note unattended bags and other items of interest.

The Homeland Security Department currently lends its funds based upon the areas of greatest need. New York tops the top-10 list and thus receives the largest portion of money. "They are not the model," said William Bratton, a former top police official in Boston, Los Angeles and New York, speaking of the NYPD. "Nobody else can afford it."

Following the Boston attacks, more cities are pointing out the type of attack and how easily it was carried out by two young men who could have ended up almost anywhere in America. For that reason, more cities are looking around and asking why they cannot have a bit more funding when it comes to surveillance and prevention of terrorism.
