(USGovernment-News.Com, May 06, 2013 ) SACRAMENTO, CA – More bicyclists are expected on the streets of the Sacramento region this May during National Bike Month. Officials have noticed more cyclists in the area each year and are expecting more cyclists than ever, due to good weather and a still lagging economy.
In recent years, the city has made changes to accommodate the cycling community, including the addition of bike lanes on major commuting roads, more room made for cyclists on Regional Transit buses and Capitol Corridor trains, and a planned “bike share” program that will allow bicycle rentals for short trips. These changes allow for commuters to take more advantage of public transportation.
“Cycling has more momentum now than anytime since the biking movement of the 1970s,” said Chris Morfas, an employee of the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District; the agency is one of several local advocates for more bicycling.
The local area plays host to a variety of Bike Month events, as well as challenges for local employers, schools, and other teams. Events include helmet fitting clinics, bicycle movie nights, and of course, organized group rides.
Unfortunately, the increase in cycling has made safety concerns apparent in certain areas of the region. Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates is currently working with local governments to achieve safer roads and intersections and create “equal-opportunity avenues”.
