(USGovernment-News.Com, May 04, 2013 ) Augusta, GA – Late Thursday afternoon an SUV drifted off the road and slammed into a nearby tree critically injuring the driver and killing two-year-old Sky Allen. The young girl was seated in the front seat of the vehicle and according to reports was not buckled in.
The single-car wreck occurred on Ray Owens Road in front of North Columbia Elementary School. Marina Middlebrooks, the child’s mother, was driving her Honda CRV north when she drifted onto oncoming traffic and then off the road where she collided with a tree.
The mother was airlifted to Georgia Regents Medical Center and according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office she is in stable condition. An autopsy of the child has been scheduled by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Atlanta and the wreck is still under investigation.
The Eichholz Law Firm would like to remind drivers about the importance, and legal requirement, of buckling children into child safety seats. Georgia law states that all children under the age of 8 are required to be properly restrained in the appropriate child safety seat or booster seat.
According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, in Richmond County in 2009 approximately 740 children under the age of 4 were involved in motor vehicle accidents and at least 23 of them were not restrained at the time of the crash. Additionally, of crashes where children were found to be in the vehicle, approximately 12% of them were found to not have been using the appropriate child safety seats at the time of the crash.
