Detroit Barbershop Owner Shares Business Success Tips and More at Detroit College

(USGovernment-News.Com, May 04, 2013 ) Detroit, MI – Detroit barbershop owner Harlan “Jay” Bivens came to the Eastern Campus of Wayne Community College District (WCCCD) to give a talk at the Small Business Roundtable event last Thursday. Bivens shared a lot of information, including success tips.

Knowing that many people would like to achieve higher levels of success than they already have, Harlan Bivens explained that a non-profit group that he co-directs, The Better Detroit Youth Movement (BDYM), has an exercise it encourages each of its members and visitors to complete. It is called Multiple Alternative Pathways to Success (M.A.P.S.).

Bivens explained that M.A.P.S. helps people identify what they want, and it makes it easier for them to explain to other people who might be able to help them. He made the point that certainly people get their own ideas independently, but other people might be able to help, especially if they can see and understand the success that first person really wants to achieve. M.A.P.S. helps uncover those multiple alternative pathways to reach to reach those goals of success.

Harlan “Jay” Bivens owns a Detroit barbershop on 17178 Livernois Ave called JaysFades.com (http://www.DetroitBarbershop.com). His barbershop in Detroit has been open for eight (8) years, and he and his team took a non-standard marketing approach. He did not worry so much about trying to find the right advertising channels. He became heavily involved with making communities within the City of Detroit better.

Bivens immersed himself with other people who got to know him as a person. He mentioned that often there are egotistical and territorial issues that keep communities from growing. By working with the community as a person, he found that many people wanted to help him, often in ways he never imagined but were truly helpful.

He also explained that mentors can be a key piece toward achieving success goals. He said that, “Having a mentor is like driving at night with headlights.” When a person knows what he or she wants to achieve, they are more likely to attract the help of other people who already achieved that goal. Many people think they need to solve problems alone, but mentors can serve as a key missing piece to success.

Bivens explained another benefit of M.A.P.S. He said, “Unexpected events happen in people’s lives, and we don’t schedule them. They just happen, and they (often) take us off our track (to the success we really want to achieve). Having a plan helps us keep our focus.”

During his talk at the Small Business Roundtable event at WCCCD, Harlan Bivens also shared tips about steps students can take to get college scholarships, including announcing an upcoming scholarship fair. He even shared some key tips about how to interpret body language, which can help improve a person’s ability to know how to communicate with someone who might be able to help with a step toward success.

For more information about how to benefit from Multiple Alternative Pathways to Success (M.A.P.S.) you can attend BDYM meetings on Tuesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Harlen “Jay” Bivens’ JaysFades.com Detroit barbershop on 17178 Livernois Ave, or visit the website for the Better Detroit Youth Movement (BDYM) at http://www.BetterDetroitYouth.org.
