Edwards Law Firm Reminds Residents to Be Prepared For Tornado Season

(USGovernment-News.Com, May 03, 2013 ) Tulsa, OK – Although the beginning of tornado season was in mid-March, May is the time of year when Oklahoma residents need to truly make sure they are prepared for this type of natural disaster. Friday, May 3rd, will mark the 14th anniversary of the vicious tornado outbreak of 1999.

The peak of tornado season begins during the first week of May and 14 years ago 66 twisters broke out in Oklahoma and Kansas. The largest tornado was an F5 and touched down just southwest of Chickasha, Oklahoma. The outbreak of these twisters caused 50 deaths and approximately $1.9 billion of damage.

Residents should be aware of the classic signs of an approaching tornado as funnel clouds are not always visible due to rain or cloud obstruction. Some other signs to watch for include:

• Large, dark, low-lying clouds

• Large hail

• Dark green-colored skies

• A loud roar, similar to the sound of a freight train

Everyone should have a safe spot to go to whether the event occurs while they are at home, school, work, or elsewhere. Always be sure to choose somewhere safe and sturdy, and away from windows.

If a person finds themselves on the road during a tornado it is important that they do not try to outrun a tornado. Find a safe spot outdoors away from trees and vehicles if you cannot reach a shelter in time and do not stay inside your vehicle. Find a gully or ditch, lay flat down in it and protect your head with a blanket or your arms. Consider carrying an emergency kit in your car that includes a battery powered radio, blanket, and first-aid kit.

Adverse weather is common during this time of year which can lead to many car accidents. On April 26th a hail storm damaged many vehicles on the road and although no accidents were reported on account of that storm, in 2011 at least 333 accidents throughout Oklahoma occurred during hail/sleet conditions.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a bad weather accident caused by another individual’s negligence, the victim may be entitled to compensation for property damage, medical bills, lost wages, and more. An experienced Tulsa personal injury attorney can help you determine if you may be entitled to make a claim for your accident injuries.
