Florida Heading Towards Texting and Driving Ban Reports Gordon & Doner

(USGovernment-News.Com, April 26, 2013 ) West Palm Beach, FL – While texting and driving accidents continue to increase in South Florida, the Florida Legislature is working to put a ban on texting while driving.

A recent study conducted by the Highway Loss Data Institute in California, Louisiana, Minnesota, and Washington, where texting bans have already been set in place, demonstrate that these bans are actually causing accidents for these individuals to increase.

The reason is that drivers, who once were sending text messages with the phone up, are now sending text messages from a position which causes them to take their attention off the road even longer. It is believed that the current laws are not being enforced enough, while the fines are also not large enough to deter people from texting.

In Florida, the proposition to banned texting while driving will make it a secondary offence, which means that a police officer cannot pull you over for texting while driving, however they can write you a $30 ticket for doing so only if you are pulled over for another violation, such as speeding.

Clearly, if these laws were harsher, such as including texting while driving as careless driving, it would make the violation a $60 fine, or reckless driving which would make the violation a $500 fine and potentially 90 days in jail. With harsher punishments drivers would think twice about sending and responding to text messages while driving.
