Avoiding a Tailgating Accident Tips from Mike Lewis Attorneys

(USGovernment-News.Com, April 08, 2013 ) WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The act of tailgating another vehicle is one of the main causes for automobile accidents in the United States. Aggressive driving is extremely dangerous and is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly. By tailgating another vehicle, it significantly decreases reaction time and results in 1/3 of all rear-end collisions. By being aware of the dangers, it can make us more aware of our surrounds and force us to pay closer attention while driving.

Some causes of tailgating accidents are road rage, ignorant driving, and impatient driving. These are all considered to be forms of reckless driving. Whatever you do, do NOT try to teach these drivers a lesson! Slamming on breaks, reducing speeds, or flashing your break lights will more than likely only aggravate the already aggressive driver and will only cause further problems. Our North Carolina auto accident lawyers have seen countless, severe injuries that have been the result of one car following the other too close.

Here are a few tips to help avoid an accident as a result of a tailgater:

• Maintain the speed limit at all times.

• Leave a comfortable amount of space in between you and the vehicle in front of you.

• Drive in the right lane; use the left only for passing as this is the “fast lane”

• Know how quickly your vehicle can stop. Allow an appropriate amount of time to properly brake.

• Double the normal following distance during bad weather. Wet roads make it harder to stop and easier for accidents to happen.

You can help avoid accidents by driving safely. Leave early for destinations and allow yourself plenty of time to get there as to not be in such a rush that you feel tailgating is necessary. Remember as frustrating as it may be, do not try to teach an aggressive driver a lesson! Be safe out there.
