Honeymoon Over for Same-Sex Marriages in Ireland reports Solicitors Dublin Services

(USGovernment-News.Com, April 01, 2013 ) Dublin , Ireland -- Two year following the gay rights campaigners celebrated their historic law that legislated same-sex partnerships, the literal and metaphorical honeymoons have ended. That is the case at least for the first couple who have become the initial couple to seek divorce.

Over 1,00 homosexual couples have had their relationships formalized under the civil partnership law that was introduced in Ireland in 2011, according to the Courts Services. One Dublin-based pair have now called time on their union and set out to receive a dissolvement of the tie.

Under the dissolution requirements, a couple must be living apart for at least two years prior to applying for formal ends to the partnership. This means that it is the earliest the couple could have even sought out the official separation.

That said, the director of the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network states that it does not necessarily mean they had the shortest possible relationship. “The provisions are the same and there is the same emphasis that the vulnerable party is protected, so although it’s the first time a dissolution will be processed here, I would hope it would go smoothly for all involved,” said Sheehan.

While there are gay couples that may consider going their separate ways, others want to further legally reinforce their relationships and campaign for full same-sex marriages. The same-sex marriage movement received a boost in the run-up to the Constitutional Convention's meeting on the issue. However, the deadline for submission to the convention passed last week with over 1,000 individuals and organizations contributing.

The remaining four issue considered by the convention to date had been between 12 and 28 submissions, so the thousand for gay marriage should gay some clout. “They are running about four to one in favour of same-sex marriage,” Mr Sheehan said. “We’re really pleased that there’s been such a big response and that so many of them are supportive of taking the next step towards full equality.”
