Arnold Law Firm Discusses Recent Investigation on Skilled Nursing Facilities

(USGovernment-News.Com, March 01, 2013 ) SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A new investigation conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services found that Medicare paid billions in taxpayer dollars to skilled nursing facilities for inadequate care. According to the report, Medicare paid $5.1 billion dollars for patients to stay nursing homes nationwide that did not meet federal standards for quality of care in 2009. Arnold Law Firm, a Sacramento personal injury law firm wants residents to be aware that their loved ones might not be getting the care that they deserve.

Oftentimes, senior adults and other patients that need daily assistance from a nurse or therapist will wind up at a skilled nursing facility, which can be reimbursed by the government for the care that they provided to the patients.

The law requires the facilities to develop a personalized care plan for each patient, so the medical professionals and the caregivers are on the same page on how to care for the patient. However, the report found that approximately 20 percent of the patients’ health issues were not being addressed in the care plans. In some cases, the patients were given therapy when it was not needed. In other cases, patients were given therapy before their basic health needs were met.

In addition, the report found that some of the nursing homes were putting the patients in dangerous and neglectful conditions.

This report shows that even when nursing homes get government funding, they are not always following federal standards. The attorneys at Arnold Law Firm urge Sacramento residents to monitor the care that their loved ones receive at area nursing homes. While federal law requires these facilities to provide a certain standard of care, many caregivers fail to do so, which can put the elderly in harm’s way.

Arnold Law Firm is available to assist those that have suffered from nursing home neglect. For additional information about the legal rights available to nursing home abuse victims, please visit www.justice4you.com.
