Art for All Abilities- Cochran Firm reports on VSA Ohio

(USGovernment-News.Com, February 12, 2013 ) Columbus, OH -- VSA (Very Special Arts) Ohio, based in Columbus, Ohio is a service organization that works to promote the enrichment of art for all abilities across all artistic mediums. VSA Ohio has made monumental strides in changing people’s perceptions at the dynamic intersection of arts and disability through photography, music, painting, drawing, dance and movement. To accomplish this, VSA Ohio offers a variety of programs centered on education, professional development, outreach and awareness, which provide valuable resources to both disabled artists and leaders in Ohio’s cultural sector.

Education: VSA Ohio shares resources and information with artists, educators and administrators to encourage and create opportunities for hands-on art education to people with disabilities. They do this by finding teaching artists and partnering them with community educators to develop disability inclusive classrooms where learning is enhanced by the incorporation of arts into the curriculum. By bringing together teachers and students of all abilities, unique opportunities are provided to witness the power of the arts in supporting students’ achievement, innovation and creativity.

Professional Development: Developing an artistic career is a long-term process that requires various types of assistance at different times. VSA Ohio recognizes that artists with disabilities often face unique challenges in advancing their artistic practice. Their professional development program serves to connect individuals with opportunities and with one another. In addition to being a great source for networking, VSA Ohio facilitates circumstances for people with disabilities to create, sell, and exhibit their art in inclusive settings.

VSA Ohio and the Ohio Arts Council work together to make careers in the arts more accessible to Ohioans with disabilities through the Artist with Disabilities Access Program (ADAP) grant program. ADAP provides support of up to $500 to individual artists with disabilities, allowing them to engage in activities that will help them advance their artistic practice, further their career, or move to a higher level of artistic development.

Outreach: VSA Ohio’s monthly eVoice newsletter and their website are consistently updated with news, events, and opportunities throughout Ohio. Two phenomenal examples of events that showcase the work of disabled artists are Accessible Expressions Ohio and ReelAbilities. Accessible Expressions Ohio is an annual adjudicated, statewide exhibition and tour of visual art for artists of all ages with disabilities. And, ReelAbilities is a film festival that presents award-winning films by and about people with disabilities in multiple locations throughout the Greater Columbus Area.

Awareness: VSA Ohio brings art and inspiration to galleries, classrooms and other community settings across the state of Ohio. Their programs and services continually evolve to engage artists, teachers and the community and a supportive network of people who share a passion for the arts.

For more information about the programs offered by VSA Ohio, interested persons may call (614) 241-5325 or visit their website at http://www.vsao.org.
