UC Irvine Law School Eyes Top-20 Spot reports NTLA

(USGovernment-News.Com, January 21, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The graduating class of UC Irvine's law school was at the top of the heap when it came to California law schools, save for Stanford, for highest bar exam passing grades. However, the observers stated that despite the passing rate of 90%, the young institution still has large obstacles to overcome when it looks to being a top 20 U.S. Law school.

UC Irvine beat No. 7-ranked UC Berkeley and its 86% passing rate for the first-time test takers, and also surpassed No. 15-ranked UCLA by a 1% margin. The data came from the July 2012 administration of California bar exam, Stanford's state bar passing rate was 94%.

Yes, the marks are impressive when it comes to the passing rate, but the bar exam pass rate is only 2% of the school's overall score in the rankings that were developed by the U.S. News and World Report magazine.

UCI law school heads have proclaimed they wish to clinch a spot in the magazine's top 20 listing when UCI is eligible in 2015.

"Anything is possible, but it would be a pretty big leap," said Robert Morse of U.S. News & World Report, who developed the magazine's ranking methodology.

A 40% marking for the school is dependent upon the reputation of the U.S. Legal community. Administrators receive surveys each year, along with tenured law faculty, judges, attorneys general, law partners,, and other practicing attorney's. The survey asks them to rate the school 1-5.

"If it's not as well known, then the people doing the survey don't know it, so how can they rate it highly?" said Morse, U.S. News' data research director. UC Irvine "has a microscopic number of grads, so their reputation as practitioners is not going to be known."

Yale landed at the stop spot, with Standford taking second place last year.

"We set the quality level for our school and kept it for the next few years, even though we no longer give scholarships across the board," law school Dean Erwin Chemerinsky said.
