Some Big Sports Personalities Still Avoid Twitter reports BLOROO

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 30, 2012 ) London, U.K -- While Twitter is undeniably a monumental tool for fans and stars to connect, there are those who tend to steer clear of the service altogether. This, despite the fact that so many celebrities and national/worldwide sporting athletes and personalities find such success on the social media platform.

For some, the platform is a service that is useful during events themselves. For others, the service is no more than a useful up-to-the-minute news service. Regardless of the functionality of the service for a respective individual, there is almost a use for it. That is, unless you are one of the small handful of notable holdouts within the realm of sports.

Kobe Bryant's absence from Twitter has been well documented, and his lack of personal account has led some to wonder about the Laker standout as well as other's who shy away from the service.

Kobe is not the only one within the sporting community to forgo Twitter and other social media uses. Tom Brady and Derek Jeter are also missing from the platform. Maria Sharapova, who has over 9 million Facebook fans, is also missing from Twitter.

Long-time NFL star and destined Hall-of-Famer Peyton Manning is also nowhere to be found on the social service. NBA legend Michael Jordan as well as NASCAR superstar Dale Earnhardt Jr. are absent as well.

There are also those who are not on Twitter for obvious reasons. Individuals like Bobby Knight and Charles Barkley, as well as Jon Gruden are nowhere to be found on Twitter. Most likely because of their pension to think first and concern themselves with political correctness second.

There are those like Cam Newton who state that “the downside of twitter outweighs the upside.”

Speaking on Michael Jordan's absence was his manager, Estee Portnoy, who stated “I never say never.. but he doesn't do it now nor does he have an immediate plan to join.”

The lack of interest by some of the biggest stars may turn if there were more endorsement deals to offer from a tie to Twitter; however, that may not be likely either.

But some of the holdouts are beginning to turn for one reason or another. Sharapova will make her debut on the site in January, according to agent Max Eisenbud.

"When re-evaluating how she reaches her fans, we understood that there are people on Twitter who are not on Facebook, and we want them to be able to keep up with Maria in the same way," Eisenbud said.
