(USGovernment-News.Com, December 26, 2012 ) Dothan, Al -- Literacy Mid-South (LMS) aims to increase the percentage of literate adults living in the mid-south region. For over thirty years, LMS has been fulfilling this goal by providing group literacy schools, one-on-one training and a variety of other resources to enhance students’ learning experience. The programs offered by LMS not only focus on programs that promote literacy in the short term; these programs also inspire students to dedicate themselves in the pursuit of a lifetime of learning.
Literacy Mid-South offers the following programs:
Smart Memphis Coalition – Smart Memphis is an initiative created by LMS that offers training and resources to a group of non-profit organizations, government agencies, businesses and learning institutions with the similar goals of improving how students, both young and old, are taught and learn. One of the primary ways Smart Memphis Coalition helps the above listed organizations is by providing them with visibility. The benefit of this visible presence helps them attract donors and volunteers.
Adult Learning Program – LMS provides the opportunity for low-literate adults to obtain a basic education through their Adult Learning Program. Classes and tutors are available weekdays and evenings. LMS teaches these adult students through small learning groups, interest-based classes and with individual tutors. In addition to basic education, participants can also take part in LMS’s computer lab, where volunteers assist those wanting to learn basic computer skills.
First Book Mid-South – LMS also partners with the local organization, First Book. These non-profits work together to promote literacy efforts in the Greater Memphis area and provides many low-income children with the opportunity to own their first new books.
