(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 13, 2012 ) London, U.K -- In an effort to revitalize the heart of Camden Town, a controversial £300 million Hayley Wharf project was approved by the Camden Council’s development committee on November 29.
The proposal, submitted by developer Stanley Sidings, aims to revitalize Hawley Wharf and the surrounding area, including the market site that was destroyed by a fire in 2008.
The development will include 170 homes, an art-house cinema, a revamped market area. It will also include a new school over a two-hectare plot of land, and is expected to create approximately 1,000 1,000 new jobs.
A previous proposal that featured two large brick arches that incorporated about 200 new homes and a new market beside RegentÂ’s Canal was shot down by the development committee back in March amid public outcry over the size and potential impact of the project.
After scaling back the project following months of negotiations with council officers and community groups, the developer received approval from the committee during the meeting at Camden Town Hall.
Stanley Sidings spokesman Mark Alper said, "It keeps our town center evolving into the future. I strongly believe we are now presenting to you a scheme that all of us will be proud of for many years to come."
Among the changes from SidingsÂ’ original proposal is an increase in public open space area and a limit to the height of several buildings.
Designed by SidingsÂ’ lead architect Simon Allford, the row of homes along Hawley Road are now four stories tall instead of five, and the highest residential blocks are nine stories high.
A row of Victorian villas in Hawley Road will still be demolished as planned originally, in spite of a petition objecting to the demolition.
In the voting, nine members of the committee voted for approval, with one abstention.
