Cochran Firm Reports on Operation Stand Down to Help Veterans

(USGovernment-News.Com, November 20, 2012 ) Dothan, AL -- Veterans in Nashville, Tennessee who are down on their luck have an organization created specifically for them providing veterans with resources to get their lives back on track. It is believed that there are about 700 homeless veterans in the Nashville area. Operation Stand Down Nashville, Inc (OSDN) is a non-profit organization with the ultimate goal of giving veterans in need the resources and skills necessary to rejoin their community as productive, responsible citizens.

Hundreds of veterans participate in OSDN programs each year where they are able to receive medical assistance, food, counseling, social services, legal aid, grants for certain bills/expenses, shelter, and even free haircuts. Operation Stand Down in Nashville has a unique partnership with the VA Medical Center and the VA Regional Office that allows them to offer thorough and personalized social services to more of its participants than other agencies in this area.

OSDN offers the following services to all veterans who were honorably discharged:

Employment Services – OSDN Employment Services office is staffed by a team of knowledgeable employment specialists, who do their best to place clients in jobs they are truly interested in. In addition to OSDN staff, a representative from the Department of Labor and Workforce Development Office visits OSDN several times a week to help pair veterans with local companies and industries looking for employees. With the main goal of job retention, OSDN provides their clients one-on-one training in the following areas:

• Completing Applications

• Developing Employment Histories

• Dressing for Success

• Interview Skills

• Resume Construction

• Searching for a Job

Transitional Housing Program – To help homeless veterans return to independent living, OSDN operates seven community-based transitional houses. This housing program provides accommodations in a safe, well-structured and supportive environment. Veterans who take advantage of the housing program also participate in a holistic, 12-step recovery program.

Social Service Center – The OSDN service center features a comprehensive selection of advocacy resources for veterans. These resources include VA benefits information, healthcare referrals, coordination and referrals with other agencies, job listings, and personal care items. In addition to the advocacy services offered, the Social Service Center serves as a communication hub by providing mail services, telephones and computer access. All services for veteran visitors are free in the OSDN Service Center.

Annual Stand Down Weekend Event – This event, with a unique three day concept, has enabled Nashville’s Annual Stand Down Event to partner with a coalition of over fifty community organizations to offer full-service opportunities to homeless veterans in the area. The event provides outreach, information, recreation activities, health care, legal assistance and entertainment among all the other services offered by the various centers and programs above. The event has been held annually each fall since 1993. This year’s event was held in October.

More information about Operation Stand Down Nashville’s services and programs, may be obtained by calling (615) 248-1981 or visiting their website at www.osdnashville.org.
