Founded in 1980, Capital Area Food Bank responds to the hunger by annually distributing nearly 30 million pounds of food to more than 478,000 people through the help of their partner agencies in the Washington, D.C. area. This organization strives to uplift those in need by providing them with the best services possible. They are committed to help nourish and empower individuals, families and the community by providing them with healthy food, nutrition education and advocacy for those at risk of hunger.
Capitol area food bank not only offers hand-outs but also provides classes on gardening, nutrition and cooking so people can become self-reliant and get out of the “need cycle.”
Capital Area Food Bank offers many different programs. A few of these programs include:
• Senior Brown Bag (monthly supplemental bags of food as well as educational materials on nutrition and food sustainability topics)
• Direct Distributions
• Hunger Lifeline (assists phone callers in conveniently located sources of food)
• Kids Café (community sites offering afterschool and summer meals to children)
• Sister Hookup (approximately 300 Retail locations donate over 4 million pounds of food to food bank partner agencies annually)
• Food Stamp Initiative (SNAP)
• Mobile Pantry
• Grow A Row (home gardeners can donate fresh produce when they grow too much for themselves).
