Cochran Firm Reports on the T.K. Martin Center

(USGovernment-News.Com, October 17, 2012 ) Dothan, AL – Mississippi State University’s T.K. Martin Center for Technology and Disability helps people overcome their disabilities with the use of leading edge technology. The University has been a national leader in the effort to accommodate students who have disabilities for over forty years and currently hosts hundreds of students with various levels of disabilities.

The T.K. Martin Center consists of a team of professionals in occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, special educators, rehabilitationists and engineers who collaborate to develop innovative solutions with positive results. The team is aided by students in various academic studies who gain first hand knowledge and skill working in various technologies and therapies while seeing results of their work in people’s lives.

The following are among the various services the Center provides:

Adaptive Driving- People are evaluated and trained in driving modified vehicles. In addition, various modifications are tested and further developed to make this task easier and safer.

Neural and Physical Disabilities- Individuals with brain trauma and other physical disabilities are evaluated to determine what technology can be provided to enhance their lives and increase their capabilities. Speech skills are also assessed and communication devices and education therapies can be recommended. Even people with hearing and visual difficulties can benefit from the Center’s many therapies and products.

Computer Access- The Center works to develop computer interface devices and products to enable people with disabilities to use a personal computer.

Job Accommodations- Many people have been able to lead productive careers due to work accommodations recommended by the T.K. Martin Center. The Team collaborates with rehabilitation counselors, related professionals, and job service providers in a holistic approach to enable persons with disabilities to overcome. Recommendations can be made to allow work environments to be adapted to meet specialized needs.

People with disabilities who could benefit from increased function through the use of technology should contact the Mississippi State University’s T.K. Martin Center by calling 662-325-1028 or visit their website at http://www.tkmartin.msstate.edu.
