The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has joined forces with public health officials as well as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct a multistate investigation in regard to the serious health risk present in fungal meningitis being found across the country. In addition to these recalled steroid medications, a statement issued on October 6, 2012 released information that the New England Compounding Center has recalled all products compounded within the facility. Anyone who has received an epidural steroid injection within the last 5 months may be at risk of developing fungal meningitis.
Connecticut residents are being warned that the state was one of the 23 which had reported shipments to the 75 health care facilities across the country. The CDC estimates that approximately 13,000 people across the U.S. may have been exposed to the dangerous medication. The fungus in the steroid medication vials has been linked to the development of fungal meningitis in the patients who have received injections.
