Boston Scientific, Corp., a manufacturer of vaginal mesh, is facing two federal lawsuits that are associated with the implantation of its vaginal mesh products. This comes after a long line of other similar lawsuits filed around the country.
Complaints against the company were filed in Boston by Cambridge lawyer, William Hunt, on behalf of Veronica Rector of Tennessee and Rosemary Robinson of Kansas. The lawsuit doesn't go into much detail about the complaints, but both women claim they were painfully and permanently injured by products made by Boston Scientific.
The lawsuit alleges that the products made by Boston Scientific have a tendency to migrate into surrounding tissues and fail to address the problem in which they were intended. These synthetic meshes are supposed to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP), where weakened muscles cause the pelvic muscles to slip out of place, and stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
A Boston Scientific spokesman declined to comment on the case, citing a company policy against speaking about pending litigations.
These lawsuits are among several other, similar suits filed in the United States, including Boston Scientific rival, Johnson & Johnson.
In 2008, the United States' Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about vaginal mesh, due to an increasing number of consumer complaints. The FDA urges surgeons to receive specialized training on how to properly implant the device. Additionally, patients should be warned of potential complications the agency deemed as rare, but serious.
In July 2011, the FDA issued another warning about vaginal mesh, citing more than 2,000 consumer complaints. The complications were split almost evenly between patients being treated for POP and SUI, and many of the complications required additional surgeries and hospitalization.
Mesh complications include bleeding, infection, painful urination, painful sexual intercourse, mesh shrinkage, and mesh migration.
Collectively, companies that manufacture these devices face more than 600 lawsuits from women alleging they were injured by the implants.
