As the FDA announced it would investigate the Yaz blood clot risk, and that associated with similar pills, it advised that women should not stop taking the medication until speaking with their doctors. The agency did, however, advise women to call their doctor immediately if they developed leg pain, severe chest pain, shortness of breath or other blood clot symptoms. The agency also recommended that women who smoke and are over the age of 35 should not take combination oral contraceptives because they have an increased chance of developing blood clots and other serious cardiovascular events.
