Tennessee Legislators gather in Nashville to learn and discuss Comprehensive Tort Reform Legislation

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 16, 2011 ) Washington, DC - The Tennessee Legislature plans to consider tort reform legislation with multiple provisions designed to instill fairness and predictability in the stateÂ’s legal system. These reforms will prevent unnecessary and frivolous lawsuits from becoming burdens to private businesses.

To provide Tennessee legislators with a better understanding of tort reform, the American Legislative Exchange CouncilÂ’s (ALEC) Civil Justice Task Force hosted a Tort Reform Boot Camp in Nashville on Tuesday afternoon. This educational seminar brought ALECÂ’s policy experts to concerned legislators to provide a crash course on legal reform and discuss the range of problems facing the state civil justice system.

“Tennessee is taking a serious look at any legislation that will boost the economy, relieve burdens on the private sector and lead to economic growth and stability. ALEC provides valuable information through these educational seminars and the Tort Reform Boot Camp guide will be a significant reference as we navigate through tort reform legislation,” said ALEC Board Member and Tennessee State Chair Curry Todd (R-TN).

The Tennessee Legislature is one of several states this year using comprehensive tort reform legislation as a tool to encourage business confidence, spark economic recovery and pave the way for job creation in a budget-neutral way.

The ALEC Civil Justice Task Force is committed to achieving this goal and is helping to educate legislators so they may institute meaningful legal reform in Tennessee as well as in other states across the country.

Legislators in attendance received a copy of ALECÂ’s newly released Tort Reform Boot Camp: The State LegislatorÂ’s Guide. Authored by Civil Justice Task Force Director Amy Kjose, the publication provides concise, easy-to-understand explanations of the Task ForceÂ’s most significant priorities, as well as practical solutions, helpful talking points, and insights into the discussions surrounding these policies.
