Black Boxes in Semi-Trucks Could Save Lives

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 14, 2011 ) WASHINGTON, DC- LegalView, a leading on-line legal resource, has updated its auto accident portal.

When a semi truck has an accident, it is often difficult for investigators to determine the case of the crash. However, the use of black boxes like the ones found in airplanes may help.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is requesting that all commercial trucks carry black boxes. The organization wants commercial semi trucks to have video cameras and install vehicle even data recorders. This is something that the NTSB has advocated for more than a decade.

The black boxes would record the vehicle's speed, the steering actions of the driver, and whether or not the brakes are working correctly before impact. This data would help investigators determine the cause of an accident and help prevent future truck accidents.

Black boxes have proved successful in airplanes and small vehicles for years, so putting them in commercial trucks could help save thousands of lives.

Most people are familiar with the use of black boxes in aviation. The black box in an airplane records the pilots' conversations during a flight, so if a crash does occur, investigators can piece together what caused the crash. Investigators also look at the planes' wreckage which can help them determine how the crash happened.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk of roadway crashes related to on-the-job operation of automobiles affects millions of US workers. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that in 2008, almost 3.9 million American workers operate motor vehicles as part of their jobs. Of those, 40 percent (1.7 million) are employed as heavy-truck (including tractor-trailers) drivers. Motor vehicle accidents are currently the leading cause of work-related fatalities. Of approximately 5,700 fatalities reported annually to the Bureaus of Labor Statistics, 35 percent are related to motor vehicle accidents.

The impact of an accident ranges from minor to catastrophic injuries, or even death. Other issues can include: pain, suffering, and repairing a damaged vehicle. Financial liability usually falls to the insurance company of the driver at fault. However, if the driver has inadequate or lack of insurance, the victim may be entailed to a car accident settlement.
