New Mexico Senator Urges FTC to Investigate Football Helmet Companies

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 11, 2011 ) WASHINGTON, DC - Sen. Tom Udall D-N.M. is urging the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate misleading claims in the selling of new football helmets and reconditioning of used ones. According to National Public Radio (NPR) and The New York Times, Udall wrote a letter to the FTC Chair, John Leibowitz, explaining that helmet companies appear to be engaging in misleading advertising and falsely selling used helmets as meeting an industry wide standard.

Specifically, Udall is concerned about Riddell, a leading helmet maker. According to the company's web web site, research shows a 31 percent reduction in the risk of concussion in players who wear its helmets. However, there does not seem to be much scientific evidence to support this claim, says Udall.

Football helmets are used to help protect players from brain damage. In November, Udall asked the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to investigate whether or not safety standards for helmets are adequate enough to protect players from injury. Udall serves on the Senate Committee, which manages the CPSC.

Helmets used in the NFL, NCAA, and high school are required to go through testing developed by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE), but the group's web site says it establishes voluntary test standards and manufacturers test itstheir own helmets. Also, the NOCSAE does not possess a surveillance mechanism to enforce such compliances.

A traumatic brain injury, or a tbi can be the caused by several things, including; a concussion resulting from a sports-related injury. Those who participate in high-contact sports such as football are at higher risk for TBIs. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1.4 million Americans suffer a traumatic brain injury every year. Of those, 50,000 die and over 200,000 need hospitalization or some form of traumatic brain injury treatment.

For many, the emotional, physical, and financial toll that suffering from a TBI causes is much more than they could have ever predicted.
