Darvon and Darvocet contained the active ingredient propoxyphene, a relatively weak narcotic designed to treat mild to moderate pain. Darvon and Darvocet work to relieve pain by acting on the central nervous system, rather than directly at the site of pain. Both recalled propoxyphene products were prescribed for long-term and short-term pain, including the discomfort experienced following a surgical procedure. Darvon was helpful in certain individuals, including those allergic to acetaminophen, while Darvocet aimed to maximize pain relief benefits in users, as it contained both propoxyphene and acetaminophen.
The drugs, however, were not without side effects. Darvon and Darvocet received a black box warning in 2009 to highlight the risk of fatal overdoses, both accidental and intentional (suicide), in patients taking large doses and/or propoxyphene in combination with alcohol or central nervous system depressants. Most recently, Darvon and Darvocet were part of a propoxyphene recall; this was issued after the FDA reviewed a study which indicated that, even when taken in recommended dosages, propoxyphene can dangerously interact with the electrical activity of the heart.
