Laundry Pod Lawsuits: More States Warn Consumers Of Laundry Pod Poisoning In Young Children

(USGovernment-News.Com, June 08, 2016 ) Laundry Pod Lawsuits: Poison centers in three states have recently issued warnings about the dangers that liquid laundry detergent pods pose to young children. The warnings came on the heels of a report that found children under 6 are seriously and fatally injured more by laundry detergent pods than by traditional laundry and dishwater detergents. Families are now filing laundry pod poisoning lawsuits against manufacturers of the candy-like detergent pods over failing to warn consumers about the injuries young children suffer after ingesting the liquid detergent pods. The attorneys at Wright & Schulte LLC are currently representing the families of infants and young children as well as the family of an elderly man who was fatally injured after ingesting the candy like laundry pods.

Wright & Schulte LLC also continues to speak with families whose children have been harmed by liquid laundry detergent pods. The Firm is representing families of 13 children who were seriously injured after ingesting Tide Pods laundry detergent. (Case No. A14068580, Court of Common Pleas in Hamilton County, Ohio) The firm is also representing the family of a 67-year-old man who suffered from dementia, and bit into Tide Pods packets and died, according to the complaint.

(Case No. A 1500868, Hamilton County (Ohio) Court of Common Pleas)

Dr. Gary Lopez, director of Georgia Poison Control, told the Atlanta Journal and Constitution that the number of children falling ill from exposure to laundry pods has tripled since 2012. The colorful pods that resemble candy “are like magnets to children,” Lopez said. Reports of young children ingesting laundry pods increased nearly 10-fold in Illinois from 2012 to 2014, according to data from that state’s poison center. To prevent children from ingesting the laundry packets, the Arizona Poison and Drug Center recommends keeping the pods out of children’s reach. In Pima County, Arizona, the number of calls to the poison center there climbed from 36 in 2013 to 40 in 2014. The calls took a slight dip in 2015 to 35.

Poison control centers say children who ingest liquid laundry detergent pods may experience vomiting, coughing, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, eye irritation, and in the most serious cases, comas and seizures. The centers also reported receiving more calls over the last three years of children falling ill by laundry detergent pods than traditional laundry detergent. A study published in April in the journal, Pediatrics, found poison control centers nationwide received 62,254 calls from January 2013 through December 2014 about children under 6 years old being exposed to traditional laundry detergent, laundry detergent packets, and dishwasher detergent. Of that number, 60 percent of the calls were over laundry detergent packets compared to 17 percent of the calls related to exposure to traditional laundry detergent.

Consumers like the convenience of laundry detergent pods because they are pre-measured to wash a single load of laundry. However, politicians, consumer safety advocates, and parents whose children have been injured have called for laundry detergent manufacturers to change the packaging and labeling of its pods, and the formula of the highly concentrated detergent. In response to the mounting complaints, Procter & Gamble changed its Tide Pods bag to add a new child-proof zipper and warnings that urge consumers to keep the pods bag closed and out of reach around young children. The redesigned bags
